Northern Manitoba First Nation locked down after fatal shooting

Pimicikamak Cree Nation, a First Nation community in northern Manitoba, was placed under lockdown early Saturday following a fatal shooting.

Chief David Monias announced the lockdown in a social media post, saying one person had died in what he described as a "serious incident" involving gunfire. RCMP's major crimes unit is investigating. The victim has not been publicly identified.

Residents were instructed to stay inside their homes, lock all doors and windows, keep children indoors and avoid opening doors to anyone they do not know. All Treaty and Indian Days celebrations and gatherings were cancelled until further notice. Monias urged residents to cooperate with police, report suspicious activity directly to RCMP, and refrain from sharing unconfirmed information on social media.

In an update Saturday afternoon, Monias said some residents were not following the lockdown and urged them to "stay home." He also announced a funeral would take place that day for immediate family only, with no strangers allowed.

"This lockdown is a precautionary measure to protect every member of our community while police conduct their investigation," Monias said.

How long the lockdown will remain in place and whether anyone has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting have not been disclosed.
