Smaller Quebec parties battle resource gap as five main contenders dominate 2026 campaign

Fifteen registered political parties are running candidates in Quebec's 2026 election, but smaller parties face what Climat Québec leader Martine Ouellet describes as an enormous structural disadvantage: the five main contenders—Coalition Avenir Québec, Parti Québécois, Quebec Liberals, Quebec Conservatives, and Québec solidaire—receive overwhelmingly focused media attention and benefit from party financing allocated by last election results.

"There's a category of runners that start 50 metres ahead of the others in a 100-metre race," Ouellet said Montreal, describing the resource disparity.

Climat Québec, registered in 2021, is a sovereigntist party advocating urgent action on the climate crisis. It is running 52 candidates. Ouellet, a former Bloc Québécois leader and former Parti Québécois cabinet minister, says the party's climate and environment focus encompasses economic development, health, and education. Climat Québec proposes scrapping the Alto high-speed rail project between Quebec City and Toronto, calling it too corporate-linked and costly. Instead, it favours modernizing existing rail infrastructure and proposes a fast, affordable rail link between Montreal and Quebec City.

The Canadian Party of Quebec is running 29 candidates and brands itself "Quebec's only fully federalist party" with the slogan "Democracy without Division." Leader Joseph Cianflone says the party offers "an actual vision of Quebec that's united and that is beyond language and identity politics." The party opposes laws restricting rights, use of the notwithstanding clause to override Charter sections, Quebec language laws, and Quebec secularism laws. Its six pillars are upholding rights, respecting the Canadian constitution, bilingualism, educational choice, building prosperity, and reconciliation.

Other registered smaller parties include the Green Party of Quebec, the Marxist-Leninist party, and the Parti Culinaire du Québec, which advocates a food-based "gastrocracy." Smaller parties are running dozens of candidates with a fraction of the resources and visibility of major parties.
