Conservative MP Scott Aitchison of Parry Sound-Muskoka expected to resign by end of fall
The former mayor and 2022 leadership candidate plans to step down at the end of the fall sitting, creating another vacancy in a House already missing six MPs.

Conservative MP Scott Aitchison is expected to resign by the end of fall sitting, two sources said. A senior Conservative source said Pierre Poilievre was told of the resignation plan last week. Aitchison's office did not immediately return a request for comment.
Aitchison has represented Ontario's Parry Sound-Muskoka riding since the 2019 election. He is a former mayor of Huntsville and launched a leadership bid in the 2022 Conservative campaign, finishing fifth. Poilievre, chosen as party chief in 2022, named Aitchison as housing critic. Housing was a key feature of Aitchison's leadership campaign.
Aitchison's resignation would create another vacancy in a House already missing six seats. Richard Martel, a former Conservative MP, was appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Mark Carney early in the summer and was sworn in earlier this week. Cathay Wagantall and Larry Brock stepped down in the past month. Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault officially resigned last month, as did Liberal MP Shaun Chen in mid-August. NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice and Bloc Québécois MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay both left federal politics to run in the Quebec provincial election.
