Time is running out for Canadians to claim compensation from a $7.5 million settlement tied to a listeria outbreak in plant-based dairy alternatives. The deadline to file is October 16, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PST, administered through Concilia.

The outbreak, traced to Silk and Great Value brand refrigerated beverages, occurred between August 2023 and mid-July 2024. The contamination killed three people, sickened 20 others, and resulted in 15 hospitalizations. Danone Canada and Walmart Canada, the companies that sold the products, agreed to the settlement without admitting wrongdoing or liability. Joriki Inc. manufactured the products.

Eligible claimants include anyone in Canada who purchased or consumed the recalled products, as well as family members and dependents of those who died or suffered physical or psychological harm. Compensation ranges based on symptom duration: $400 for symptoms lasting up to 48 hours; $1,500 for symptoms lasting more than 48 hours but up to one week; $7,000 for symptoms longer than one week without hospitalization; $10,000 to $30,000 for hospitalizations without severe complications; and up to $150,000 for severe complications or permanent symptoms. Families of those who died can claim up to $300,000.

The recall was issued on July 8, 2024, with the latest affected product having a best-before date of October 4, 2024. Claims are filed online. The Supreme Court of British Columbia granted final approval of the settlement on February 18, 2026.
