Trump announces ban on CNN, MSNBC and Politico from White House over what he calls 'fake news'

President Trump announced the immediate ban of CNN, MSNBC and Politico from the White House on Friday, stating the outlets report what he called "fake news."

"Media outlets shouldn't be able to constantly write or report fiction and lies when they're covering the President of the United States," Trump said in a Truth Social post, adding "Other fake news media outlets to follow."

Trump did not point to specific stories that prompted the ban. When asked by reporters in the Oval Office, he said no particular coverage prompted the move: "It's really just cumulative stories over the last few years, you get sick of it." He characterized the outlets as writing negative stories deliberately "because they want to try and diminish Republicans and a Republican administration."

However, CNN's Chief Media Analyst Brian Stelter said on CNN News Central that "right now CNN's team remains at the White House working just like a usual, normal Friday afternoon," and noted there was "no indication that the administration is taking any steps to actually follow through on his threat." Stelter emphasized that while the threat would have "real implications for the First Amendment and for press freedom in the United States," the White House had not yet implemented it.

It remains unclear whether a U.S. president has legal authority to bar news organizations from White House premises. Trump has long railed against media coverage and claimed he is a victim of unfair reporting. When pressed on whether courts should bar outlets for false reporting, Trump said: "I think it's good to point it out, whether it survives or doesn't."
