Capy Castaway, Toronto game inspired by escaped High Park Zoo capybaras, launches August 6

If you've ever wondered what the escaped High Park Zoo capybaras got up to in Toronto, indie studio Kitten Cup has an answer: Capy Castaway, a cozy exploration game launching August 6 on Steam.

The game follows a silent capybara pup named Capy and a cantankerous crow named Corvi as they try to find their way home after a mysterious flood. Kitten Cup has made no secret that the game is inspired by the real-life Bonnie and Clyde escape, and by Toronto itself. The island setting features a litany of nods to the city and Canada as a whole.

Creative director and art director Saffron Aurora (known for Pekoe and The Big Con) centers the visuals around a vibrant painterly aesthetic. The speechless Capy's emotions are conveyed through adorable emojis, which give the player dialogue choices that Corvi relays verbally to NPCs. You can control both Capy and Corvi, with the option for two-player co-op. The crow can reach distant objects and briefly carry the capybara, creating an amusing dynamic between the leads as Corvi manages his frustrations at being translator and chaperone alongside his reactions to the island's eccentric animals.

What truly sets Capy Castaway apart is the Canadiana packed throughout. References include Honest Ed's, TTC streetcars, Silver Snail Comics, Tim Hortons cups, loonies and toonies, and even Ananas the pineapple from the 1980s Canadian French-language kids show Téléfrançais. Names have been changed or withheld where necessary for legal reasons, though the game's best joke involves a clear mention of Sudbury. For a country that rarely gets to play itself in media, especially video games, the affectionate portrayal of Canadian culture is both hoot-worthy and genuinely touching.

The game does have its rough edges. The isometric perspective, coupled with biomes divided by pools of water, makes navigation tedious at times. Near the end, the journal indicated two more NPCs to help before the finale, but backtracking proved difficult because the bird's-eye view didn't always show which direction to go. Large stretches of water sometimes left no indication of the path forward. These friction points aside, Capy Castaway succeeds in its core mission: a charming, Canadian-inflected adventure that celebrates both the city and the country.
