Buddy Cole is back, and you can see him at Factory Theatre until November 8. Scott Thompson's one-man show, The Last Glory Hole, is Buddy's first major outing nearly four decades after the flamboyant alpha queen debuted on The Kids in the Hall.
Thompson says the show was partly driven by revenge. In a January 2025 Cracked interview, he said Amazon allowed no Buddy Cole monologues in the 2022 Kids in the Hall reboot, that all Kids in the Hall material had to be vetted by DEI and GLAAD, and that most of his material was removed two weeks before shooting. His only appearance in the reboot was a single sketch about the last glory hole.
Thompson says Buddy has never grown or learned. "He never grows, never learns. He's like a rock in a river: everything goes around him, and the river keeps changing, but he is immovable," he told Toronto Life. He credits the character's staying power to an eye for where power is shifting.
The character's voice came from a man Thompson loved in 1982, an effeminate alpha queen who died of AIDS. Thompson said he created Buddy to hide behind while homophobia remained so severe. Early audiences were largely Kids in the Hall fans, he says, but the show is now reaching younger people of all kinds.
