The Taninas family, who have run Scarborough's Coffee In on Lawrence East for about 20 years, are opening a new concept in Toronto. Coffee In is known for Filipino comfort food, including La Paz Botchoy, and despite its name it is not a coffee shop, a confusion the family says it hears often.
Almusal, expected to open in early 2027, is a coffee and brunch spot the next generation of the family is taking on. Co-owner Erika Taninas describes it as a "modern, warm, and inviting neighbourhood cafe" serving coffee drinks, matcha, all-day brunch and lunch options.
"Our vision is to create more than just a place to grab coffee or enjoy a meal," Erika Taninas said. "We want it to be a space where people can slow down, connect, and feel at home."
She said Almusal will have its own identity, separate from Coffee In, while carrying the family's history forward. "Opening Almusal is our way of carrying that legacy forward while bringing a new vision to life," she said.
The location has not been announced. The family says updates will be posted on Almusal's social media.
