Two Canadian pizza chefs have been named among the world's best by the 2026 Best Pizza Awards, a ranking determined by a panel of food journalists, gastronomy experts, pizza chefs, and industry professionals.
Ryan Baddeley of Pizzeria Badiali in Toronto's west end placed 59th on the list. Baddeley opened the neighbourhood pizzeria in 2021, delivering what the awards describe as "a refined yet nostalgic approach to pizza by the slice, blending the bold, comforting spirit of New York-style classics with the finesse of Italian-inspired specialty pies." The restaurant has become so iconic that it has partnered with major brands like Miss Vickie's and Shake Shack.
Cédric Toullec of Lou Pécou Artisanal Pizzeria in Halifax placed 92nd. Toullec was born and raised in Marseille, France, where his grandparents taught him to cook with high-quality ingredients. At Lou Pécou, the dough is made with 100 per cent organic flours and topped with local vegetables and cured meats. The awards recognize Toullec as a master artisan pizzaiolo who approaches traditions with "a forward-thinking approach," rooting his work in sustainability and authenticity.
The Best Pizza Awards panel votes for the individual pizza chef rather than the pizzeria itself. To be eligible, a chef must actively work at a venue where their pizza can be tasted. The awards describe their mission as breaking down barriers in the pizza world and spotlighting authentic craftsmanship, bold innovation, and diverse voices shaping the future of pizza.
