Viral Dot Cakes Land in Toronto Bakeries This Week
The TikTok-famous multicoloured-sprinkle cakes are here. We found five spots where you can grab one.
Dot cakes are officially Toronto's latest viral dessert obsession. These single-serving cakes — basically cupcakes' fancier cousin — owe their internet fame to a thick crust of multicoloured nonpareils packed into the frosting. TikTok has been eating them up since May, with creators dragging metal spoons across the top for ASMR effect before revealing the dense icing-to-cake ratio inside.
The trend started in New York City at The Dot Cakes, but Toronto's bakers have already caught on. Mily Sweets, a grassroots micro-bakery in Midtown run by sisters, got first-mover advantage and saw their social media explode within days. Orders are limited — you have to watch their feeds for the next drop.
But they're not alone anymore. Beccad Goods added cream-cheese-icing versions to their lineup. XO Bisous serves theirs in a coffee cup. Short & Sweet Cupcakes on Avenue and Lawrence makes five flavours: chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, carrot, and Oreo. Andrea's Cookies is launching a dot-cake-inspired cookie on June 3.
If Toronto's history with internet food trends is any guide, expect lines at every location that has them. The trick is catching the drops before they sell out.
