Brampton's annual Diwali Mela returns Nov. 8 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Sesquicentennial Park, 11475 Bramlea Rd. This is the fourth year of the festival, which the city describes as a South Asian celebration of the triumph of good over evil and of new beginnings. Organizers expect thousands of local residents.
The program includes classical dance, traditional folk entertainment, and workshops to learn popular dance styles, with performances from regions across India. The headline act is Sukhshinder Shinda, a British-Indian singer-songwriter, performing a free Indi-pop concert. The evening ends with a drone show and fireworks display.
Brampton Transit is running free shuttles every 30 minutes from Mount Pleasant GO Station, the Brampton Soccer Centre, Sheridan College and the Gore Meadows Community Centre.
Mayor Patrick Brown said in a city press release, "I always look forward to Diwali season in Brampton when communities across the city come together to celebrate through events and festivities," and that the event is "where families can share in the joy of the Festival of Lights."
The source does not say whether the festival is free overall, only that the Shinda concert is free, or what admission costs for the other events. It also does not give the concert start time, whether shuttles run during the full four-hour window, the number of drones or the length of the fireworks, or what happens if it rains.
