Mimico Train Station, abandoned 20 years, finally enters restoration phase this spring

A century-old train station that has sat decaying in Etobicoke for nearly two decades is finally moving toward restoration.

The Mimico Train Station, built in 1916 and originally operated on the Grand Trunk Railway until the 1960s, was abandoned by 1989. After more than a decade of neglect, CN Rail purchased it in 2001 and applied for a demolition permit. A local community organization successfully fought to preserve it.

The station was relocated to Coronation Park in Etobicoke in 2007, where it has rested on a concrete foundation ever since. In 2013, it underwent renovation to serve as a condominium presentation centre — work that covered most of its original finishes.

Today, the stucco-exterior, asphalt-shingle-roof structure bears little resemblance to its heritage status, looking more like a park bathroom than a preserved historic building. But momentum has finally shifted.

The City hired a design team in fall 2025. Community engagement and design development ran through winter and summer of this year. By fall through December, the City expects to reveal a detailed design and hire a construction team.

Construction is now set to begin in spring 2027 — exactly 20 years after the station's move to Coronation Park. What the restored station will ultimately serve — whether as a museum, event space, community gathering place, or another use — has not yet been disclosed. The project's budget and full scope of repairs remain unspecified.
