A suspect is in custody after allegedly firing a gun at a police officer in Mississauga on Sunday morning.
Peel Regional Police were conducting an investigation in the area of Torbram Road and Lucknow Drive when a male pulled out a firearm and shot at an officer. The officer was not struck and did not suffer any injuries.
The suspect was arrested and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. After being cleared by hospital staff, the suspect was taken into police custody.
The incident does not fall under the mandate of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The investigation remains ongoing.
The arrest comes after two Ontario police officers were killed in separate incidents this month. Toronto police Constable Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was shot and killed June 11 while officers executed a search warrant at a North York apartment building. A 19-year-old suspect has been charged with first-degree murder. Days earlier, on June 9, Ontario Provincial Police Constable Tarun Bali, 29, was killed in the Hearst area after being struck by a vehicle during an investigation. An 18-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder, dangerous driving, and flight from police.
