A 70-year-old man has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving charges after an SUV he was parking crashed into a Richmond Hill daycare on September 10, 2025, killing a toddler and injuring other children and staff.

Vinay Kumar Gupta pleaded guilty in Newmarket court Monday to one count of dangerous operation causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. Court heard that Gupta arrived at First Roots Early Education Academy with his wife in a gray SUV just before 3 p.m. to pick up his two grandchildren. While attempting to park, his vehicle continued moving up a raised concrete sidewalk and through an exterior window, crashing into the building.

The boy who died was 1½ years old. Other children were injured, including one with life-altering injuries and another with broken bones and head injuries. Three adult staff members were also hurt.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 8.
