Former Liberal MP and MPP Han Dong is running for Toronto city council in Scarborough North this fall.

Dong announced his candidacy on social media Wednesday. He represented Ontario Liberals in Trinity-Spadina from 2014 to 2018, then won back-to-back federal elections for the Liberals in Don Valley North in 2019 and 2021.

In 2023, Dong resigned from the federal Liberal caucus following a Global News report about alleged communications with the Chinese Consulate. The Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference ultimately cleared him of wrongdoing in 2025, and he settled a defamation lawsuit against Global.

Dong says he plans to lean on his decades of provincial and federal experience to attract investment and jobs to Scarborough North while promoting fiscal discipline at city hall.
