A Scarborough woman is heading into early retirement after discovering a forgotten lottery ticket was worth $1 million.
Laurie M. had purchased a Lotto 6/49 ticket at Shoppers Drug Mart on Eglinton Avenue East and tucked it into her purse, where it sat for several days. After spotting a lottery advertisement while out, she remembered the ticket and stopped at a store to check it. The clerk's response shocked her: she'd won the $1-million Gold Ball prize from the May 6 draw.
"The clerk looked at me and said, 'Ma'am, you won more than just three Free Plays!'" Laurie recalled. "That's when she told me I had won $1 million. I immediately started shaking, and I think my heart nearly stopped!"
Laurie has been playing the lottery twice a week for about 25 years with no major wins until now. She said the win means she can finally retire and plans to travel to London, Scotland, and elsewhere in Europe. She also wants to take up painting classes—something work hours never allowed.
