Toronto's much-anticipated inaugural Taste of Little Jamaica festival has been cancelled just two weeks before it was set to open on July 18, dealing a fresh blow to a neighbourhood still rebuilding from over 15 years of Eglinton Crosstown LRT construction.
Organizers said they were unable to secure all required approvals from the City of Toronto despite submitting paperwork on time. The festival was created by merging two existing Caribbean events—Taste the Caribbean and Toronto Patty Festival—to celebrate the community's recovery and cultural contributions.
Toronto Patty Festival Director Lori Beazer suggested the city's capacity was stretched thin due to hosting the FIFA World Cup. "We would require police services, and transportation," she said. "I do think, in fairness, that it has everything to do with FIFA."
The Little Jamaica Business Improvement Area cancelled its own festival last year citing funding and permit issues. Despite this year's cancellation, organizers remain committed to returning in 2027. They encouraged residents to support other Caribbean events happening across Toronto this summer.
