Huntington Road in Vaughan closed indefinitely after sinkhole opens during storm

A sinkhole opened on Huntington Road in Vaughan during Wednesday's intense storm, forcing an indefinite closure between Rutherford Road and Trade Valley Drive.

The Toronto area received heavy rainfall in a short period. "With that much rainfall in a short period of time … it can really overwhelm infrastructure," Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca said. City officials say the closure is necessary because sinkholes often signal deeper structural issues beneath the asphalt. "We have emergency crews and contractor partners who are working very hard to try to figure out the best way to get that repaired and get that road re-opened safely," Del Duca said.

Huntington Road will remain closed for an extended period while engineers assess damage and determine how much of the roadbed has been compromised. The city has not provided a timeline for repairs. Drivers are asked to detour around the area; signage has been placed at both ends of the closure. As HOC reported on August 26, a sinkhole on Jones Avenue in Riverdale also closed that street and rerouted TTC buses, showing the storm's impact on infrastructure across the region.
