Canada Post will launch Saturday and Sunday parcel delivery in Toronto starting this November, marking the next phase of its effort to compete with private couriers. The service is already running in Montreal and Ottawa; it will expand to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton in early 2027. The postal service aims to offer weekend delivery to more than seven million households across Canada by 2027.

The expansion comes as Canada Post faces mounting losses. The organization lost $1.57 billion in its 2025 fiscal year—its worst on record—and has accumulated $5.4 billion in losses since 2018. The federal government approved a $673 million bailout in May to enable Canada Post to meet operating costs, following earlier injections of $1.03 billion in early 2025 and a $1 billion top-up approved that same year.

Residents can check eligibility for weekend delivery via Canada Post's list of Forward Sortation Areas. The service applies to parcels only, not standard mail.

NDP Leader Avi Lewis questioned why Canada Post faces constant scrutiny over its financial performance while public services like ambulance and police operations are not expected to turn a profit. "We have shoved Canada Post so far into the market mindset that every few months, we have a national conversation about 'Why isn't Canada Post making money?' Does the ambulance service make money? Do the police services make money?" Lewis said on CTV Power Play.

The source did not specify who funds the weekend delivery expansion or disclose the program's operational costs.
