Thousands of cyclists took over the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway on Sunday for the fifth annual Bike for Brain Health charity ride, raising critical funds for dementia research.

The event, which closed the expressways to traffic and opened them exclusively to riders, has become a signature Toronto summer fundraiser. Participants ranged from seasoned cyclists to families riding together, all united by support for dementia research and awareness.

CBC Toronto spoke with riders about their participation and what the ride means to the community. The event demonstrates how Toronto uses its major infrastructure not just for traffic flow but for public good—turning the Gardiner and DVP, usually choked with cars, into a space for community gathering and fundraising.
