Around 30,000 Toronto Hydro customers lost electricity Wednesday night in a large swath of the east end, with repairs underway and most customers expected to regain power early Thursday morning.
The outage affected an area bounded by Lawrence Avenue to the north, Woodbine Avenue to the west, Cherry Beach to the south, and Jarvis Street to the east. The cause remains uncertain at this point.
A series of severe thunderstorms moved through the Greater Toronto Area on Wednesday evening, with Environment Canada warning of wind gusts up to 100 kilometres an hour. Such conditions can damage tree branches and bring down power lines. Toronto Hydro's website showed crews working to restore service but indicated that the majority of affected customers likely wouldn't see power restored until early Thursday.
