Environment Canada issued a yellow-level warning for severe thunderstorms across Toronto and six surrounding areas Monday afternoon, tracking a storm capable of producing strong wind gusts, quarter-size hail and heavy rain.
The warning was issued for Toronto, Pickering, Oshawa, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham just after 4 p.m. Monday. Environment Canada says local power outages are likely and that damage to roofs, fences, soft shelters and trees is likely, with a risk of injury.
"Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail," the agency advised. Isolated showers could continue into Monday evening and were expected to dry up by Tuesday morning.
The weather on Tuesday was expected to be sunny with temperatures reaching a high of 28 C.
