Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith has confirmed he will resign his seat in the House of Commons, closing the door on a decade of federal representation for Beaches-East York.
Eskine-Smith, first elected in 2015, briefly served as housing minister in Justin Trudeau's final cabinet and Mark Carney's first cabinet. He sent the resignation notice to supporters Friday in an email inviting them to celebrate his decade of public service, but the message did not specify when he intends to leave Parliament.
The move effectively ends his bid for the Ontario Liberal Party leadership. Erskine-Smith had planned to jump to provincial politics, but the plan hit a wall last month when he lost the Liberal nomination for a provincial byelection in a Toronto seat. He contested the result, arguing there were irregularities with the nomination process, but the party rejected his appeal in late May.
Eskine-Smith has not responded to requests for comment on his next steps.
