A German World Cup fan was assaulted at a popular King West bar on Saturday after waving a small rainbow flag during celebrations of Germany's 2-1 victory over Côte d'Ivoire.

The supporter and two companions were at Paris Texas when a group of five men in their early twenties allegedly confronted him over the flag. The fan said the group hurled homophobic slurs before the confrontation turned physical. He initially managed to escape, but said he was sucker punched from the side when he returned to retrieve something.

The incident left him with stitches on the right side of his face, heavy scratches, and a torn Germany national team jersey. His medical bill reached $5,000. When contacted by a German news outlet, the fan said bouncers offered little help and police, who arrived after 20 minutes, found the perpetrators had already fled.

The fan posted about the assault on Instagram, sharing photos of his injuries and writing: "Beaten up because of a rainbow flag." He emphasized his decision to speak publicly wasn't about the medical costs but about drawing attention to ongoing hatred. "I'm not gay myself. But I know the LGBTQ+ community lives with this every single day, and that's exactly why I won't stay silent," he wrote. "This World Cup has written some beautiful stories, but this is one of its ugly ones, and pretending it doesn't exist helps no one."

Toronto is home to one of North America's largest Pride parades and is considered one of the most progressive LGBTQ+ cities in the region. Toronto Police are investigating the incident.
