Toronto Stadium—home to BMO Field—sits nowhere near a subway station, which creates a logistics puzzle during the World Cup. The city and transit agencies have mapped out alternatives to ease the expected 300,000 visitors.
The city expects congestion to peak on match days between 3 and 7 p.m. on June 12, 17, 20, 23, and 26, and July 2. Road closures will include Lake Shore Boulevard between British Columbia Road and Bathurst Street, and local-traffic-only restrictions in Liberty Village and Fort York on Fan Festival days. Toronto Stadium itself has no parking for fans.
For transit, Exhibition GO Station sits right outside the stadium, one stop from Union Station. Metrolinx is running up to six trains per hour during peak match times. A temporary transit hub at Fleet Street between Strachan and Fort York will serve the 511 Bathurst and 509 Harbourfront streetcars, connecting directly to the stadium and Fan Festival site. Both streetcars are adding overnight service during the tournament.
Drop-off and pick-up zones for taxis and ride-hailing services are set up at four spots within walking distance of the stadium. The city has explicitly discouraged driving, predicting the World Cup could add 10 to 15 per cent more vehicles to downtown roads already stretched thin. Plan to take transit, bike, or walk—and leave plenty of time.
