Eric Lombardi, a housing advocate and former tech and finance worker, has announced his bid for Ontario Liberal Party leadership, joining a crowded field of candidates.
Lombardi, an engineering graduate from the University of Waterloo, has been vocal about housing reform and its impact on younger voters who feel locked out of both the political process and the housing market. His campaign will focus on improving the economy to fund better education and health-care systems.
He joins four other candidates in the race: former Liberal MP and cabinet member Navdeep Bains, provincial caucus members Rob Cerjanec and Lee Fairclough, and former political staffer Dylan Marando. Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith said a leadership run is "much less likely" after losing a nomination race in Scarborough Southwest.
The leadership race comes as the Ontario Liberals seek to rebuild credibility after provincial losses. Lombardi's focus on housing and younger voters reflects the party's effort to reconnect with demographics that have drifted toward other parties.
