Holly Roy organized a memorial Saturday to honour her son JahVai's life—a year after he was struck by stray gunfire while sleeping in their North York apartment.
On August 16, 2025, just before 12:30 a.m., a shootout erupted outside the building at 15 Martha Eaton Way, near Trethewey Drive. JahVai, 8, was hit in bed. Two additional apartment units were struck during the gunfire. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
Three youths, ages 15 to 18 at the time of the shooting, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The case has not been resolved in court.
"I decided I'm going to turn my pain into purpose," Roy told the source Saturday. The memorial included music and children's activities, aimed at bringing families together and celebrating JahVai's character. "What I wanted to have today was something that reflects my son. He was very athletic, full of energy, very compassionate. I want to celebrate my son's life, I don't want to focus on the tragedy of his passing, I want to celebrate him and carry him forward with love and purpose."
The gathering reflects Roy's ongoing advocacy against gun violence in the city.
