Renata Ford, the widow of former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, has died at age 55. Premier Doug Ford confirmed the death late Monday and asked the public to respect the family's privacy during their grief.

"My heart breaks for Stephanie and Dougie," the premier said. "They've been through so much at such young ages, and losing their mom is incredibly painful. Our whole family is hurting for them."

The cause of death was not released. Renata is survived by her two children with Rob Ford: Stephanie, 20, and Douglas, 18.

Renata's death comes a decade after Rob Ford died in March 2016 at age 46 following a battle with pleomorphic liposarcoma, an aggressive abdominal cancer. Rob served as Toronto's 64th mayor from 2010 to 2014, a tenure marked by international headlines over controversies including alleged drug use.

In recent years, Renata had pursued a $15-million lawsuit against Premier Ford and her other brother-in-law, Randy Ford, alleging they mishandled family assets and Rob Ford's estate and caused her and the children financial harm. The premier denied the allegations, and the claim could not be proved in court.

Renata also ran as a candidate for Maxime Bernier's People's Party of Canada in the 2019 federal election in Etobicoke North, finishing fourth.
