No Frills opens at Hullmark Centre where Whole Foods closed last year

No Frills is opening at Hullmark Centre on Wednesday at the southeast corner of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue East. The store, located at 4771 Yonge St., marks the return of grocery retail to a space vacated by Whole Foods Market, which closed the location on August 22, 2025, along with a second Toronto store at 1860 Bayview Ave.

The new No Frills will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. A grand opening is scheduled for September 17. Whole Foods, a Texas-based chain that first entered the Canadian market over two decades ago in Yorkville, announced the closures in the summer of 2024. At the time, a Whole Foods spokesperson said the company was "actively exploring new sites to expand our footprint in Canada," and committed to supporting affected team members.

Whole Foods is planning a new store near King Street West and Portland Street at the base of the KING Toronto development. That location will span approximately 30,000 square feet total—roughly 5,000 square feet on the street level and 25,000 square feet below.

The shift reflects a broader trend in Toronto's grocery market. Earlier this fall, as HOC reported, a Metro store at Church and Yonge closed in the summer of 2025 and reopened as Food Basics. A former Loblaws location at RioCan Empress (5095 Yonge St.) closed in October 2024 and made way for T&T Supermarket.

The closest existing No Frills to the new Hullmark Centre location is further north on Yonge Street at Centerpoint Mall, while Food Basics sits across Yonge from the new store, south of Sheppard Avenue.
