PM Carney to unveil federal AI strategy in Toronto
The government's blueprint for artificial intelligence addresses trust, worker support, digital infrastructure, and international coordination.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is announcing the federal government's strategy on artificial intelligence in Toronto today, touring an AI institute and meeting with researchers as he unveils the plan.
Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon said this week the strategy will focus on three core goals: building trust in AI, empowering workers, and helping build Canada.
The strategy addresses several fronts. Privacy and online safety laws will anchor efforts to build public trust. The government is also targeting sovereign digital infrastructure—Canadian capacity to develop and host AI systems without reliance on foreign platforms. Support for Canadian companies developing AI technology and training programs for workers across the country round out the approach.
International coordination is included, signaling Canada's intent to align with allied nations on AI governance as development accelerates globally.
The announcement comes as businesses, governments, and civil society navigate rapid machine-learning advancement and tools processing information almost instantly—with varying degrees of accuracy. It's also a moment when public skepticism is rising. Recent polling shows 68 percent of Canadians would oppose a large AI data centre being built near their homes.
