Saskatchewan Roughriders edge Toronto Argonauts 28-24 in front of sold-out Mosaic Stadium

The Saskatchewan Roughriders defeated the Toronto Argonauts 28-24 on Sunday in front of a sold-out Mosaic Stadium, preventing the Argonauts from sweeping their season series with the hometown team.

A capacity crowd of 33,350 — the CFL's biggest crowd of the season — watched the Riders use a noisy home environment to expose weaknesses in Toronto's special teams. The Argonauts were plagued by botched converts that proved costly: after one Toronto touchdown, receiver David Ungerer was caught on the wrong sideline for an illegal substitution penalty that pushed the Point-After-Touchdown back 10 yards, resulting in the kick hitting the upright. Later, after a third Toronto touchdown, Argo kicker Brady Lidster's kick was blocked by Mike Rose and returned 79 yards by Marcus Sayles to give Saskatchewan two points.

Argonauts head coach Mike Miller acknowledged the mistakes but rejected the notion that special teams alone cost the game. "It really doesn't come down to one play," Miller said. "It changes the cosmetic of the game but we still have to overcome it. We had opportunities to do that and we weren't able to."

Quarterback Chad Kelly, who completed 28 of 38 passes for 416 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, took big hits throughout the game and had to leave briefly in the third quarter, relieved by backup Nick Arbuckle. Kelly revealed after the game he suffered a broken toe. He blamed self-inflicted wounds on the loss. "I think we had seven two-and-outs today," Kelly said.

For Saskatchewan, quarterback Trevor Harris and receiver KeeSean Johnson rediscovered rhythm that had been missing in back-to-back losses, connecting 10 times for 146 yards and a touchdown. Harris finished with 313 passing yards. Trailing 24-21 with less than three minutes remaining, Saskatchewan lined up for an 11-yard field goal attempt when Argo Tarvarus McFadden jumped offside, giving the Riders a fresh set of downs. Tommy Stevens then scored on a two-yard touchdown run to give the hosts their 28-24 lead.
