Toronto Hotels Face World Cup Booking Challenges

Despite FIFA's $940 million economic forecast, hotel demand remains tepid three weeks before the tournament begins.

Toronto's hospitality industry was bracing for a booking frenzy ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the expected surge hasn't materialized with only three weeks until the first match.

The shortfall in advance reservations stands in contrast to the ambitious economic projections officials outlined. FIFA cancelled thousands of hotel room blocks across Toronto, Vancouver, and other host cities, a move that undercut the early momentum organizers hoped to build.

Hotels report receiving more individual bookings in recent months compared to the same period last year, but that gain hasn't fully compensated for the drop in group bookings. Conventions and conferences that typically fill June calendars were pushed to May or July.

Destination Toronto and the hotel association remain confident that bookings will accelerate as match dates approach. The city's allocation of $380 million in public funding for the tournament—drawn from federal, provincial, and local budgets—reflects the scale of investment, even if consumer demand hasn't yet caught up.

Toronto Stadium is expected to attract more than 45,000 spectators per match. Officials estimate that fan festivals and ancillary spending will extend the economic impact beyond stadium gates. Whether advance bookings soften closer to kickoff or remain flat remains an open question heading into June.
