Inspector Michael Hayles, 51, has been charged with two counts of impaired driving after police found him asleep behind the wheel of a stopped vehicle early Sunday morning in Leaside.
Officers were called around 6 a.m. to the area of Laird Drive and Eglinton Avenue East, where they discovered Hayles asleep in the vehicle. He was off duty at the time. Hayles was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance and impaired operation of a conveyance while having a blood alcohol level exceeding the legal limit.
Hayles has 30 years of service with Toronto Police Service. He has been suspended with pay in accordance with Ontario's Community Safety and Policing Act, said Toronto Police Service spokesperson Nadine Ramadan on Monday.
