Two people were hospitalized after a two-alarm apartment fire broke out near Jarvis Street and Dundas Street early Monday morning.
Fire crews arrived around 7:17 a.m. to find smoke coming from a unit in the downtown Toronto building. Firefighters evacuated residents while attacking the blaze. Both adults were transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The fire was brought under control and remained contained entirely to the unit of origin with no extension to neighbouring apartments. All fire alarms in the building were functioning throughout the incident. Most residents were allowed back inside shortly after, except those in the immediate area around the affected unit. The person who lived in the unit where the fire started has been displaced.
Jarvis Street between Gerrard Street and Dundas Street was closed during the emergency response but has since reopened. Investigators are assessing the damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
