Four people were hospitalized with smoke inhalation after a lithium-ion battery caught fire in a single unit on the 41st floor of 95 Thornecliffe Park East, near Overlea Boulevard, on Saturday night just before 10:30 p.m.
Toronto Fire Services extinguished the fire quickly, but smoke spread across the entire floor before eventually clearing. The cause of how the battery ignited remains under investigation.
This marks the latest in a pattern of battery fires in the city. As HighOnCity reported in June, one person died and three others were hospitalized after a fire in a North York apartment, and in July, an e-bike battery fire sent three to hospital in Scarborough.
No other injuries were reported in Saturday's incident. The source did not specify whether residents on other units of the 41st floor were evacuated or provide statements from building management or any of those hospitalized.
