Viet-Bites Serves Toronto's Best Banh Mì in a Shoebox
A hidden Cabbagetown gem is turning heads with Vietnamese banh mì and an ultra-rare Toronto dessert that's worth the hunt.
Tucked into a tiny Cabbagetown retail space is one of the few places in Toronto serving chè—a Vietnamese dessert of coconut milk, jellies, and fresh fruit—alongside what tastes like some of the city's best banh mì. Viet-Bites opened in 2025 when founder Lily decided to fill a gap she'd noticed: Toronto's Vietnamese food scene was strong, but there was almost nowhere serving the full picture, especially chè.
The banh mì here breaks the rules in the best way. The bread is crispy outside, airy inside, and stuffed with meat and pickled vegetables that taste like someone spent time on their ratios. It's the kind of sandwich that makes you understand why banh mì conquered the world. The chè is equally serious—none of that overly sweet, gummy stuff you sometimes find. This version tastes like it was made in someone's kitchen, not a factory: coconut milk that actually tastes like coconut, fresh fruit, and jellies that jiggle the right way.
The location is against you—nobody's stumbling on this place. You have to know. But that's part of its charm. Hidden gems like this are why Toronto's food scene keeps surprising people who think they've already tried everything. The sandwich and the dessert together are worth the detour into Cabbagetown.
Get there before everyone else figures it out.
