After seven years, the free Yorkville Murals festival is closing its doors due to a shortfall in city funding.
The final edition will run August 22 and 23, presented by Taglialatella Galleries and INK Entertainment in partnership with the Bloor-Yorkville Business Improvement Area. Last year's festival attracted more than 70,000 visitors, one of its most successful editions to date.
Organizers say the festival was originally created to "bring arts and culture back to a neighbourhood that was once Toronto's creative epicentre." Despite being predominantly funded by private corporate sponsors, which account for 60 per cent of expenses, the festival needs City of Toronto funding to operate at full capacity. In 2025, Yorkville Murals received city funding, but failed to secure the money needed this year. To compensate, organizers cancelled the popular Yorkville Avenue block party and other programming.
Alan Ganev, founder and creative director of Yorkville Murals, says losing the festival impacts not just visitors but artists themselves. "Yorkville Murals is therefore not simply an event. It is a platform for cultural experimentation, artistic opportunity, and community engagement," Ganev said. "By continuing this legacy while bringing forward an inclusive and forward-thinking cultural program, we create a space where artists can thrive, communities can connect, and the neighbourhood can continue to be a place where culture happens in unexpected ways."
Ganev notes the costs of hosting tens of thousands of visitors include Toronto Police Services, road closure permits, staffing, and other expenses private sponsors alone cannot cover. Last year's edition generated approximately 160 million media impressions, positioning Toronto on a larger cultural stage.
