The Canadian Coast Guard rescued a sailor attempting to set a world record for the shortest boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The CCGS Sacred Bay responded Friday morning to a distress call and located the 1.2-meter vessel, called the Big C Atlantic Challenge, about 120 kilometres east of Grates Cove on Newfoundland's Bay de Verde Peninsula. The coast guard brought the sailor to safety at Old Perlican around 2:15 p.m., but the boat was abandoned.

According to the Big C Atlantic Challenge website, the sailor was attempting the record-setting journey to raise money for cancer research.

The rescue marks one of several dramatic moments playing out as the World Cup approaches and tourism surges across Atlantic Canada.
