World Cup Day in Van, plus a few transit hiccups to dodge
Big soccer energy at BC Place today. Weather's mild, UV's high — grab sunscreen if you're heading out.
Morning. It's 14°C and partly cloudy — the kind of Tuesday that feels like it could go either way, but you're golden for the day ahead. UV's sitting at 7, which is high, so if you're spending time outside, don't sleep on sunscreen. Sun stays out till 9:19 PM, so you've got a long evening to work with.
Getting around: A heads-up if you use the Expo Line at Granville Station — the up escalator from the eastbound platform to the Dunsmuir Street exit is down today. Take the stairs or find another way out; it's annoying but workable. If you're catching a 323 bus in or out of Surrey Central, a couple of morning trips are cancelled due to operational issues — the 7:14 am and 8:40 am heading out toward Newton Exchange are off the board, along with the 6:35 am and 7:58 am coming back the other way. Worth checking before you head out.
On the local front: The final men's World Cup match on home soil is happening right here today at BC Place at 1:00 PM — if you're into it, that's the event of the day. There's also a free viewing party at The Pearl at 9:00 AM if you want to catch it with a crowd. Beyond the pitch, North Van council reversed their chlorine plant ban after three months, and the Massey Tunnel replacement just got a lot more expensive — nearly doubled to $8.5 billion now, with the opening pushed to 2031. Closer to home, South Delta residents might notice some cloudiness in their drinking water this week while the system gets adjusted. None of it's dramatic, but good to know.
Food-wise: If you've been meaning to hit Odd Burger, you've got until July 12 — their only Vancouver spot is closing after a contract dispute with head office. On the bright side, there's new life popping up around the city. Emeri matcha just opened in Mount Pleasant where the old Goldilocks Bake Shop used to be, Les Faux Bourgeois is back in Fraserhood under new leadership with a refined menu, and a South Indian restaurant is coming to Kits this summer. Worth keeping your eyes on.
Tonight: World Cup is the main draw, but if soccer's not your scene, Come From Away is playing at Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage at 7:00 PM. Either way, you've got plenty of daylight left to sort your evening.
Cheers, and enjoy the day.
