The biggest FIFA World Cup in history officially kicks off today, with Canadian cities bracing for an influx of matches and international fans.

Canada plays its first-ever men's World Cup match on home soil Friday against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, where Alanis Morissette will sing the national anthem alongside performances by Michael Bublé, Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez, William Prince and Sanjoy.

The tournament runs until July 19, with six games in Toronto and seven in Vancouver. Toronto hosted a spirited countdown concert Wednesday night featuring Bryan Adams, Wyclef Jean, Nora Fatehi and The Beaches before thousands of fans.

Daily FIFA Fan Festivals will run throughout the tournament in both Canadian host cities. Toronto will feature artists such as Alessia Cara, Murda Beatz and French Montana, while Vancouver welcomes Mötley Crüe, Broken Social Scene and Kaytranada.

Ticket prices have drawn criticism from some residents. One Toronto fan said he spent about $1,000 on a ticket to a Germany vs. Ivory Coast game on June 20, adding that lower prices would have made the event more accessible. Others, however, view the disruption as worth the moment—Brampton roots artist AHI, who performed at the countdown concert, noted that major events like this shouldn't be taken for granted, recalling how the 2019 Raptors championship was followed by pandemic lockdowns.

For Ottawa residents, the tournament offers a chance to catch world-class football without traveling far.
