Friday's finally here — sunny, live music, and World Cup hype kicks off tomorrow.
It's 15°C and bright. Grab the sunscreen, catch some live music tonight, and get ready for the weekend.
Fifteen degrees and mainly sunny — sounds like you can ditch the layers. UV's running high at 8.0 though, so if you're heading out for lunch or catching the World Cup watch parties that are about to take over the city, slap some sunscreen on. You've got sixteen hours of daylight to work with, and sunset doesn't drop until 9:21 PM, so there's plenty of evening left to play with.
Couple of transit notes if you're heading out to Surrey: the 503 and 345 routes ran detours nightly earlier this week due to construction on Fraser Hwy, but those wrapped up Thursday night, so you should be clear. If you're heading into the city and catching the Expo Line, the down escalator at Granville Station from the Granville Street entrance is down for now — stairs or the other entry will get you there.
It's been a wild week locally. Vaughn Palmer, the Sun's political columnist, just landed the Michener-Baxter Award, and Canada's men's national team made history with a 6-0 World Cup win over Qatar — Granville Street was absolutely packed with celebrations. The energy's still buzzing through Richmond and Surrey, and you can feel the momentum building into tomorrow when the tournament really kicks off.
If you're thinking food, Pony Room just brought intimate queer dining to Chinatown, and over in Mount Pleasant, Emeri Matcha Bar opened a permanent spot if you're after something bright and caffeinated. Richmond's got Richmond's Wrap-Workz, an 8,000-square-foot car shop near Bridgeport if you're into that scene, and River Rock's prepping a new restaurant after Miku closed.
Tonight's the night to get out. Kid Cudi's playing Rogers Arena at 6:30 PM with Big Boi and me n u — if you can grab a ticket, that's a solid way to start the weekend. Later on, if you're feeling the late-night spin, Cassian's at the Commodore at 10:00 PM, Hannah Diamond's at Village Studios, and Skylatylaa's holding it down at Fortune Sound Club. It's Friday; you've got options.
If you're more into watching football, Good Co. Granville is running International Football House matches starting at noon — perfect for a lazy Friday afternoon beer. With the World Cup kicking tomorrow, the whole city's about to flip into watch-party mode.
Get out there. The weather's with you.
