Mostly cloudy Tuesday — World Cup fever builds toward tomorrow's kickoff.
Good light all day, a couple of transit hiccups, and the buzz starts tonight as Canada readies for Switzerland.
Morning's sitting at 16°C and mostly cloudy — you'll want the jacket but the UV's running high at 6.0, so sunscreen if you're out long. Sun doesn't set until 9:22 tonight, so there's real daylight to work with.
Few transit notes if you're heading into town. The elevator at Waterfront Station (Cordova entrance) is down for repairs, so if stairs or the other entrance aren't your thing, plan around that. Over at Lougheed Town Centre, the up escalator from the west mezzanine to the Millennium Line platform's out of service. And if you're catching the 72 Ave eastbound bus near 148 Street, that stop's closed through tomorrow due to construction — might add a couple minutes to your route.
On the local pulse: Langley's backing a plan to repurpose an old SkyTrain car as a landmark, which is a decent bit of transit nostalgia. There's also a retired paramedic who's just launched a permanent Ukraine aid fund — worth knowing about if that's something you care to support. And the housing report's come out confirming no BC city made the nation's most affordable top 15, which isn't exactly a surprise but worth the reality check.
If you're hungry, there's good reason to check out what's happening on the food scene. A couple of spots have recently shuttered in the area — HUBco brewery in Mission after four years is one to note if you had a regular there. On the flip side, there's a solid roundup of the best burger joints around Van if you're in the mood to hunt something new. Fair warning though: a café on the Drive just got ordered closed over sanitary violations, so stick with the places you trust.
Tonight's where it gets interesting. The World Cup buildup starts now — Canada plays Switzerland tomorrow at noon, and the energy's already firing. There's a watch party at International Football House on Granville starting at 10 AM (though that's technically tomorrow morning). If you want to feel the vibe tonight, there's live music at The WISE Hall and The Pearl with Sonic Garden, Verttigo, Devours, Revolution Above Disorder, and Sundress kicking off at 7 PM. Or catch Jack Botts at Fox Cabaret same time. Good midweek energy without overcommitting, and plenty of daylight left if you want to grab dinner first.
Cheers, and see you out there.
