World Cup Wednesday — Canada takes the pitch at noon

Morning. It's 17°C and mostly cloudy, with UV sitting at 6—that's high, so if you're outside for the match or the day, sunscreen isn't optional. You've got a long one ahead: sunset's at 9:22 PM, so there's plenty of light to work with.

Commute-wise, keep an eye on the transit around BC Place if you're heading that way for the Canada vs Switzerland match at noon. It's the marquee event today—World Cup, packed crowds, all of it. If you're taking the SkyTrain, the up escalator from the west mezzanine to the Millennium Line platform at Lougheed Town Centre is out, and the down escalator at Metrotown (Expo Line, platform to Telford Ave) is also temporarily down. Nothing that'll kill your day, but good to know if those are your stops.

On the broader news front: there's been a serious teen e-scooter crash with a car over in Maple Ridge, and heat records are shattering across B.C. as temperatures keep climbing. Locally, there's a new regenerative medicine lab opening up in Mount Pleasant from Conexeu Sciences, which is worth clocking if that's your lane. There's also a fair bit of noise around NDAs in abuse and harassment cases—advocates pushing the province to tighten things up.

If you're hungry before or around the match, PeelTea's got a pop-up running free on game day. There's also a new pub opening steps from BC Place this morning if you want to catch the atmosphere with a drink. If you're thinking lunch or dinner elsewhere, Bread x Butter's fluffy egg sandwiches are tucked inside a downtown tower, and Kebab on Fire just brought the Victoria chain to Olympic Village. Copperpenny's has a new smoky gin that tastes like B.C.'s wild coast if you're looking for something to sip.

Tonally, today's about the soccer. It's the thing. But if you're skipping the match or watching and want to get out tonight, there's real live music and theatre worth the effort: Come From Away at the Stanley (1:00 PM matinee or 7:00 PM), The Black Seeds and Kownterpoint in Squamish, Searows at the Vogue, or Bob Moses at Village Studios later. Nothing wrong with a work night out—just pick your energy.

Stay dry if the clouds break into rain. Cheers.
