Monday before the rush—light commute hiccups, World Cup watch party vibes
Mostly cloudy and mild. Expo Line escalators down for repairs. Brazil match at The Pearl this morning.
Morning. It's 15°C and mostly cloudy out there—UV's sitting at 7, which is high, so if you're planning outdoor time today, sunscreen isn't optional. You've got just over 16 hours of daylight, and sunset doesn't land until 9:22 PM, so there's real evening left to work with.
Couple of transit heads-ups to sort before you head out. The down escalator from the vending machine level to the westbound platform at Burrard Station on the Expo Line is out of service as of 5:55 AM—repairs, so plan accordingly. Same deal at Gateway: the up escalator from the mezzanine to the platform is down too. If you're using Nanaimo Station, the elevator from Nanaimo Street entrance to the westbound platform is also out of service right now due to mechanical issues. Nothing catastrophic, but worth knowing if those are your regular stops.
On the local story front: there's a recovery resource centre that just opened in the Downtown Eastside, which matters if you know people who could use it. Separately, a charter boat went down near Richmond last week with six people still missing—something to be aware of. And at the Richmond Night Market, a fire took out 14 stalls, so if you were planning a visit, that's worth checking on before you head out that way.
Food-wise, there's a new spot called Sumu that just opened—they're running yakitori, hot pot, and handcrafted drinks if you're after something different. If you're heading north of the bridge, Phonatic Social in North Van is doing solid pho if that's your lane. There's also been some real standout dishes floating around the city all June that might be worth chasing down.
Right now, The Pearl's got the World Cup match on this morning—Brazil vs. Japan, Round of 32, kicks at 8:30 AM. It's a free watch party, so if you want a low-key Monday morning vibe with a crowd, that's there. Tonight, MGK's on at Rogers Arena for the Lost Americana Tour at 8:00 PM if live music is calling you.
Nothing too mad for a Monday. Commute's got some small friction, but nothing that'll kill your morning. Stay covered if you're out in the sun.
