Saturday's gentle: mostly cloudy, plenty of daylight, things to do.
Fifteen degrees, high UV, and sunset at 9:10 PM — a solid day to get outside or catch something live.
It's a real Saturday. You've got 15 degrees and mostly cloudy skies, which means you can actually move around without either freezing or melting — rare enough in July. The UV's running high at 7.0, so if you're heading out for any length of time, sunscreen's your friend even when it looks overcast.
You're getting nearly 16 hours of daylight today, so there's actual time to do things. Sunset doesn't land until 9:10 PM, which gives you plenty of flexibility for both a daytime outing and an evening plan without rushing.
If you're using transit on the east side, heads up: the 57 St stops are still wrapped up in construction through the end of next week. If you normally catch the northbound or southbound on 57 near Grove, Crescent, or 49B, you'll need to find an alternate stop or route.
On the food front, there's real stuff happening. Unscripted Coffee just opened downtown with an interesting angle — the seasonal menu gets voted on by the community, so you're not just grabbing a coffee, you're shaping what they make. If you want something more traditional, Bacchus has brought in Chef Stefan Hartmann for classical European cooking. Over on the Drive, Pax Romana's closed the old spot to move to a new location, and Les Faux Bourgeois has reopened with a fresh crew and direction if you want to swing by.
Tonight's got legs. If live comedy's your thing, Chris Estrada's at Rick Bronson's House of Comedy with shows at 7 and 9:30 PM. Magic Men Australia's at the Vogue Theatre at 7:30 if you want something a bit different. For the late crowd, Gabriel & Dresden are spinning at Celebrities Nightclub from 10 PM on — proper electronic night if that's where your head's at. There's also orchestral stuff happening (Star Wars in concert is still a draw), plus the usual Broadway runs if you want to sit down.
A couple of things worth knowing: the Lions lost their starting QB Rourke to a shoulder injury in a 19-17 loss to Edmonton, so there's some talk about the rest of the season. And on the local heat front, volunteers with Distro Disco have assembled 400 cooling kits as the province braces for a real summer — New Westminster's even enforcing indoor temperature caps for renters. It's a lived issue right now.
Get out there, stay hydrated, and enjoy the daylight.
