Monday start: transit reshuffled, night market's last summer, Cat Power tonight
Transit detours in the Valley, a few local stories worth knowing, and a show if you're feeling it.
Morning's 13°C and partly cloudy — grab a layer if you're heading out early, and remember the UV's running high at 7.0, so sunscreen's not just for the beach today. You've got nearly 15 hours of daylight to work with, sunset landing at 8:38 PM, so there's time to shift gears after work if you want it.
If you're heading out to the Valley on the 502 or 503 today, know that both routes are running detours around a road block between 176 and 184 streets. The buses are keeping stops intact, but you're looking at a detour via 64 Ave — nothing drastic, but budget a few extra minutes if you're on a tight schedule. Highway 99 in Delta's also closing overnight tonight and tomorrow for bridge work, so if you're driving through that way, plan around it or save the trip for later in the week.
Worth catching up on: Richmond Night Market's wrapping up after 26 years this summer, and the city's mayoral candidates are split on whether to step in and save it. That's a real piece of Vancity summer closing down. Over in North Delta, home prices have dropped 9 percent year-over-year as buyers cool off — something to watch if you're thinking about the market. On a heavier note, a three-year-old was airlifted out of Maple Ridge after a bear attack; the animal's still out there, so if you're heading into the backcountry anytime soon, stay sharp.
On the brighter side, there's a new Thai spot called Hen opening softly on West Broadway this week if you're craving chicken rice — worth a walk-by. If you want something more involved, Sula's running a $48 seven-course tasting menu that tours regional Indian cuisines, and there's also Cantina Social Club bringing Mexico City nightlife to downtown at Pinche Taco Shop's space. Tour de Feast is also doing solid French food without the ceremony, if that's the vibe.
Tonight Cat Power's playing the Commodore at 7 PM — moody, intimate, and worth the trip if you're in the headspace for it. Otherwise, it's a Monday, so streaming something and an early night makes total sense too. With sunset not hitting till after 8:30, you could also squeeze in a walk or a beach run after work if the weather holds.
Keep your head up out there — it's a regular Monday with a few moving pieces. Cheers.
