Friday's here—live music, transit hiccups, and an early sunset.
Light rain, a couple of road closures to dodge, and three solid shows to pick from tonight.
Morning. It's 17 and drizzly out there—bring a layer you don't mind getting damp, and clock that the UV's running high at 6.0, so if you're out between shows or catching the game, sunscreen still matters even through the clouds. Sun's down at 8:31 tonight, so you've got just over 14 hours of daylight to work with.
On the transit front: If you're heading through the Expo Line this morning, the elevator at 22nd Street Station is out of service—you'll need to take the stairs or find another way up to the Waterfront-bound platform. The 187 Parkway and 180 Lougheed routes have a few early-morning trips cancelled due to operational issues, so if you're catching one of those before 9 AM, double-check the schedule. And a heads-up if you're crossing to the North Shore: the Lions Gate Bridge is fully closed—use the Second Narrows instead and give yourself extra time.
On the local radar: B.C. Finance Minister Brenda Bailey announced an early-stage cancer diagnosis this week. City council's voting today on whether to put a public safety plebiscite on the October ballot—worth paying attention to if that's top of mind for you. There's also a good story about a Ukrainian kite master who's found healing and community out at Garry Point Park in Richmond.
If you're thinking about eating in: Jollibee's planning 16 new spots across the province over the next five years, and there's a fresh Thai chicken rice place called Hen that just softly opened on West Broadway—worth a try if you're in the mood. Cantina Social Club is bringing Mexico City nightlife to the Pinche Taco Shop downtown, and over in West Van, the historic Navvy Jack House has reopened as Navvy House restaurant right on the waterfront.
Tonight's got energy. Kingfishr's at the Commodore at 7, and Corinne Bailey Rae's over at the Vogue at 8 if soul's your lane. Fortune Sound Club's running Y2K Hits and Fits at 9:30 if you want to stretch the night out. And if you're hitting Scotiabank Field, the Canadians are taking on the Tri-City Dust Devils at 1:05 PM—daytime baseball on a rainy afternoon is its own thing.
Pick a show, commit to it, and have a solid Friday night. Cheers.
