Clear skies, live music early, and the Canadians are home.
Saturday's bright and warm enough for anything outdoors—catch some baseball, hit a show, or just move around the city easy.
It's 14°C and clear out there, which is the sweet spot for a Van August day. Sun's staying till 8:29 PM, so you've got serious daylight to work with. UV's high at 6.0, so if you're heading outside for any length of time, sunscreen's worth the thirty seconds—you'll thank yourself around dinner.
If you're heading south toward the airport or through Delta at all, the transit crews have detours running through August 21st around South Delta. The 619 and 614 are both rerouting via the Rec Centre lot and 18 Ave—not a disaster, but add a few minutes if you're catching a flight or meeting someone down there.
On the actual news front: two guys got charged this week in that Langley taxi shooting from last year. Premier Eby's also pushing back on the city's public safety plebiscite, arguing the province already backs involuntary care programs—worth reading into if that's something you've been following. And North Shore firefighters are out helping with the wildfires inland; it's been rough up there for ranchers.
Food-wise, there's some decent new openings. Hen just soft-opened on West Broadway doing Thai chicken rice—that's a lane that works in this city. Navvy House just reopened over in West Van on the waterfront if you're crossing the bridge. And if you want to get lost in something louder, Cantina Social Club is bringing that Mexico City nightlife energy to downtown at Pinche Taco Shop.
Tonally tonight splits a few ways depending on your mood. The Canadians are home at Scotiabank Field at 5:05 against Tri-City—solid weekend baseball energy if you want to catch a few innings before dinner. On the music side, you've got the Eli Young Band with Red Truck at the brewery doing their truck stop concert thing at 4 PM, which is country and community vibes. If you're after something bigger, Shinedown and Coheed and Cambria are at the Coliseum at 7 PM—proper rock lineup. Or there's Ella Red over at Fox Cabaret at 7 if you want something smaller and more intimate.
Everything's outdoors-friendly till sunset, so if you're planning an evening thing, you won't hit dark till late. Bundle up only if you're staying out past 9.
Have a good one.
