Friday's got live music, new eats, and clear skies till dark.
Mostly cloudy, 13°C—a solid fall day to kick into the weekend.
It's Friday, and the weather's cooperating: 13 degrees, mostly cloudy, and you've got just over 11 hours of daylight before sunset at 6:49 PM. UV's at 3.0, so if you're out midday there's enough sun to matter, but no reason to overdo it. This is the kind of October morning that makes you remember why people actually like living here.
If you're heading east on the bus this morning, watch for a few hiccups. The 187 Coquitlam Central has cancelled trips at 6:18, 7:02, 7:44, and 8:35 AM due to an operational issue. The 180 Lougheed is also out at 6:16 and 7:31 AM. Nothing major, but if you're catching those early runs, plan an extra five minutes. The 25 Brentwood's rerouting this morning too—it'll swing through 22 Ave and Slocan instead of the usual way, so don't be thrown if your stop feels different. And if you're using Production Way-University Station, the elevator from the concourse to the platform is temporarily down, so factor that in.
On the bigger picture: the Georgia Viaduct's Main Street off-ramp is closing for three months of work starting soon, so if that's part of your commute home, start thinking about your alternate route now. Meanwhile, out on the Sunshine Coast, the Howe Sound pulp mill is restarting after a six-week shutdown—worth knowing if you've got connections that way.
For food, there's real movement happening. West End Butcher just opened on Davie with Montreal-style house-cured meats if you're in the mood for something different. Bento Cafe YVR opened a second spot in Kerrisdale with Japanese teishoku sets, which is solid if you're hungry but want something focused. And if you've been meaning to get to Torafuku before it sells out every night, tonight's as good as any—pan-Asian, natural wine, the crowd never stops.
Evening's got options. There's Canada Super60 cricket at BC Place this afternoon (1:30 PM start, live concert too), and if live music is your thing, Meltt's at the Commodore at 6:00 PM, Enter Shikari's at the Pearl at 6:30, or you could catch the Vancouver Symphony doing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in concert at the Orpheum at 7:00 PM. That last one's a draw if you want something out of the ordinary—there's something about seeing the film with a live orchestra that hits different.
Weather stays dry through the evening, so nothing's going to wash out. Sunset's early, so plan your move by 7:00 if you're doing anything outside.
Good Friday. Get out there.
