Wednesday drizzle, transit hiccups, and Bruno Mars tonight.
Light rain, a couple of SkyTrain escalator repairs, and plenty to do when the sun sets at 6:24.
Morning all. It's 11 degrees and drizzly out there—the kind of Raincouver day that makes you grab a jacket and keep moving. UV's low (2.0), so no sunscreen panic, but bring an umbrella if you're heading out for lunch. Sun's down by 6:24, so if you're planning anything tonight, you've got a shorter window than yesterday.
Couple of heads-ups on transit. The up escalator from the mezzanine to the platform at Gateway Station on the Expo Line is down from 5:35 AM this morning for repairs—nothing that'll kill your commute, but good to know if you're heading through there early. Same deal at Surrey Central: the down escalator from the north stationhouse is out starting 5:30 AM. Neither one's a show-stopper, but stairs it is if that's your route.
Also flagging that tomorrow night into Friday morning, there's filming happening around 124 Street and 20/22 Avenue area in Surrey. The 360 Ocean Park and 360 Peace Arch Hospital buses are both getting detoured from 6 PM Thursday through 6 AM Friday. Not today, but worth noting if that's part of your regular run.
Big night coming up. Bruno Mars is at BC Place at 7 PM with RAYE and DJ Pee Wee—if you're into that, tickets are probably tight by now. If arena-sized pop isn't your scene, there's live music all over the city: Rett Madison at The WISE Hall (8 PM) if you want jazz and indie, or Almost Monday at The Pearl (same time) for something in between. Pick your vibe and get out—it's a good night for it, even if it's wet.
On the food front, if you haven't been yet, Jeju in Mount Pleasant just got Michelin recognition and people are talking about it. It's the city's first Michelin-recommended Korean spot, and autumn's bringing a whole wave of new openings if you're in the mood to explore. Worth noting too: Bayside Lounge in the West End closes at month's end after 47 years—if you've got a memory there, now's the time.
Few things worth knowing in the city right now. A carbon monoxide leak at a North Van apartment building sent six people to hospital, so if you live in an older building, maybe give your detector a quick check. Joshua Kutryk, our Canadian astronaut, sent back a photo of Vancouver from the International Space Station—pretty wild to see home from that angle. And there's all kinds of talk about Surrey's mayoral race and tree protection up in North Van, if you're keeping an eye on local politics.
Stay dry out there. See you tonight if you're heading out.
